SWIFT

The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, a member-owned cooperative based in Belgium that operates a secure messaging network between financial institutions. It connects more than 11,500 institutions across more than 220 countries and territories (Swift, checked September 2026).

The point most often missed: SWIFT carries instructions, not money. It tells banks what to do. The funds move separately, through accounts those banks hold with each other. That is why "we sent it by SWIFT" says nothing about where a payment is or what it will cost.

Its reach is unmatched, and no other network comes close for a business trading outside Europe and North America. The cost of that reach is the chain of correspondent banks that make it work, each of which can deduct from the payment as it passes.

Since 22 November 2025 cross-border payments on the network use ISO 20022 messages rather than the legacy MT formats.
