Lifting fee

A charge an intermediary bank deducts from the principal of a payment as it passes through, rather than billing it separately.

It is the reason a credited amount and an invoiced amount do not match. It is not itemised to the beneficiary and does not appear on a statement as a fee, so from the beneficiary's side the money has simply arrived short.

Whether intermediaries may deduct depends on the charge option on the instruction. Under SHA, the most common default on corporate banking platforms, they may. Under OUR, the sender bears the charges and the beneficiary receives the full amount.
